Why We Do What We Do?

Why We Do What We Do?

Girish Khare
Reason 1 : We want to support the farmers
Consider this, the prices of farm produce is fixed by middlemen who buy and sell commodities in mandis across India. These middlemen treat the produce as if it’s a share market commodity. The price they pay has no relationship with the real cost the farmer has paid for cultivation.  For the farmer it is more like gambling. On the best day a farmer can make a very small margin, on a good day he gets only his investment back, but on most days he loses part of what he invests!
Avakali has its own farms BUT also buys a significant portion from farmers at higher prices than what they would get at mandis. Avakali then sells the produce directly to the consumer!

Reason 2 : We care for your family.
Everyone is aware the pit fall and health hazards of pesticides. In fact residues of pesticides can be found in a great variety of everyday foods and beverages, including cooked meals, water, wine, fruit juices and refreshments. Washing and peeling cannot completely remove the residues. People may underestimate the real health risk of consuming such residue. Pesticides residues have also been detected in human breast milk samples and there are concerns about prenatal exposure and health effects in children. It’s one reason why pediatricians advice against very small children being fed berries. The numerous health effects associated with chemical pesticides include dermatological, gastrointestinal, neurological, carcinogenic, respiratory, reproductive, and endocrine effects.
When you buy Avakali produce it’s obvious you care about your family, because we do not use any harmful chemicals or pesticides.

Reason 3: We want to support the environment.
We are committed to not using any harmful chemicals, pesticides and fertilisers in the cultivation of our produce. This allows the land to rejuvenate and importantly does not harm birds and insects. Thus eliminating persistent and harmful pesticides from entering the environment.  Pesticides allow disease resistance to build up in plants, weeds, plant-eating-insects, fungi, and bacteria. Fertilizers, after being mixed with the soil, gradually reduce the fertility of the soil. Sometimes these harmful pesticides stick around for decades (maybe even longer).
Avakali is committed to a chemical free cultivation in the Mahabaleshwar region and elsewhere across the country. When you purchase from Avakali you support the environment.

Reason 4: We want to support the health of the Farmer.
Inappropriate use, handling and disposal of agrochemicals has an adverse health effect on the farmers.  A recent study done among 98 farmers with  the main objectives of assessing their knowledge of practices regarding storage, handling & disposal of agrochemicals. revealed::

18.4% stored agrochemicals at home.
39 % used bare hands to mix the chemicals.
33.33% disposed empty sacks or tins of agrochemicals in the open
43% reused containers/sacks to store materials at homes.
28% used inadequate personal protective equipment while applying agrochemicals.

Fertilizer handled and consumed, cause disturbances of the kidneys, lungs, liver and even cause cancer.. When you buy from Avakali you support a healthy farming community.
